Top 3 Places To Go For Sunset In Dominical

One of the many amazing things about the pacific side of Costa Rica are the ocean sunsets. Finding that right spot where you can enjoy a good drink and an epic ocean sunset, can sometimes be a little bit tricky though. Here are our three favorite spots hidden in the Dominical area.

1. Aracari – view Whales Tail from your rocking chair

The Aracari restaurant (Google maps) is part of La Cusinga Lodge, but the restaurant is open to everyone. Well, not everyone, because unlike most places in Costa Rica this place is not dog friendly and you will not be allowed in with your pup. The dirt road to the restaurant is well maintained, but quite steep at certain parts, which can get a little exciting if you have any oncoming traffic.

After parking a lush jungle path will take you to the reception and the deck. The deck is the reason why Aracari is in our top three list! From this beautiful wooden deck with cute wooden rocking chairs, you have an incredible ocean view that even overlooks Ballena National Park with its famous Whales Tail.

The best views are really from the deck and not from the restaurant section. Therefore, we recommend coming here even if just to enjoy one of their lovely smoothies or a cocktail.

Pro tip: If it fits in your schedule, make sure to go during low tide, as you will be able to see the famous whales tail in all its beauty, whilst sipping on your drink.

2. Jolly Rogers – Beer, sports & chicken wings with surreal jungle & ocean views.

A place maybe best described as your Costa Rican sports bar on a hill with insane views! A 4x4 car is recommended to reach this hidden spot up the mountain as the dirt road can get very bumpy at parts.

The menu consists mainly of different chicken wings, burgers & fries but even here you will find at least one vegetarian option. There are three TV screens that will often show American sports, but if your team is playing at the same time as a Costa Rican team, the channel will be changed.

The laid back atmosphere, with incredible wide reaching ocean views, really are something special that will make you feel that “pura vida” vibe.

3. Cabinas La Parcela – drinks, lunch or dinner, you can’t go wrong!

This little gem is hidden away at the far south end of Dominicalito beach on a little peninsula that sticks out into the ocean. You’re best to pin their location on Google maps or use Waze so that you don’t miss the small dirt road entrance off the main road. The road will take you towards the ocean and then a little up, where you will see the Restaurant nestled right at the end of the peninsula (no more than 4 minutes after making the turn off the main road).

The unique location of La Parcela allows you to see the ocean on both sides of the restaurant. On the one side you are looking over Dominicalito beach and beyond, on the other you have endless views south. No matter where you sit, you have great views!

Restaurant, Drinks & Food

Besides the location, you will also love the vibe. The staff is always kind and the blue, white, ocean meets boat interior is charming, spacious, and comfortable. Their menu has something for everyone, but we especially recommend their fish dishes. Portions are large, cocktails are strong (and delicious)!

Pro tip 1: Walk the path that is in front of the restaurant (from the side where you drive up). This will take you to the end of the peninsula and treat you to beautiful views.

Pro tip 2: If you arrive around 16:00 you are very likely to witness the monkey family that comes by nearly every day. They love peeking into the restaurant and making lots of noise by running over the roof. (first image of the blog was taken here at sunset)
